Young Educators Alliance (YEA)?
The Young Educators Alliance is a group of young people, ages 14-24, who address social and environmental issues within Detroit, in hopes to promote positive world change. YEA collectively comes together, strategizing and coming up with creative solutions to make change. YEA helps young people become leaders within their communities by building speaking skills, learning how to identify injustices, community organizing, networking and becoming environmental activists.
History
The East Michigan Environmental Action Council - a local environmental justice non-profit - saw fit to start a youth group in April of 2011. Within the city of Detroit, young people have been some of the main people directly affected by environmental and social justice issues. Detroit having some of the largest toxic industries, school closings, lack of funding and new non-supporting development has changed the city drastically for the worse. The city has a rich history from Motown music to the auto industry and more. YEA is dedicated to fighting to bring that vibrancy back into the city that it once possessed within the people and the environment.
Accomplishments
Feed 1 Teach 1
YEA organized and held an event called the Feed 1 Teach 1 to address the cash assistance cut offs in Michigan. We invited various Detroiters and served a large, healthy meal. During this event we taught and gave various alternatives on how to be less dependent on government assistance.
Educational Justice Assembly
In Atlanta, YEA hosted workshops around education with Project South youth to focus on how we could make changes in the school systems. This collaborative effort led to YEA receiving the Spirit of Detroit Award for its outstanding commitment and service to the City of Detroit.
